Why the Life–Non-Life Divide Creates Unnecessary Scientific Problems
Modern science inherited a sharp division between living and non-living matter. The division was useful for early classification and for organising research programs. It has become a source of permanent explanatory difficulties that are unnecessary once the underlying assumption is examined. If life and consciousness are fundamental properties of matter, expressed according to conditions of stability and organisation, then the sharp divide is no longer required and the problems it generates dissolve.
The difficulties created by the divide are not minor technical gaps. They include the origin of life from non-life, the hard problem of consciousness, the awkward status of viruses and dormant forms, and the apparent ontological discontinuity between physics and biology. Each of these is an artefact of insisting that most matter is utterly devoid of the properties that living systems display.
The Origin-of-Life Problem as Artefact
If matter is truly non-living until some threshold is crossed, then the appearance of life requires the insertion of a new ontological property into a continuous physical history. The same particles that participated only in simple physical interactions must at some point acquire the capacity for organised sensing, response and continuation. No physical mechanism for that insertion has ever been identified. The problem is insoluble in principle within the terms of the divide.
When the property is recognised as latent in matter from the beginning, the origin question changes character. It becomes the more tractable empirical problem of how latent capacities became progressively more elaborately expressed under favourable conditions of stability and complexity. The artificial barrier between non-life and life disappears. Research into the sequence of organisational steps remains necessary and valuable; the metaphysical demand to produce life from absolute non-life is removed.
The Hard Problem as Artefact
The hard problem of consciousness asks how and why physical processes give rise to subjective experience. The question is forced by the initial decision to describe the physical world in purely third-person, quantitative terms that leave no room for interiority. Once that description is locked in, experience can only appear as an unexplained residue. The more complete the objective description becomes, the more mysterious the residue seems.
The gap is therefore an artefact of method. When hierarchical sensing is defined as structural coupling to physical interaction channels, information-bearing state change, and persistence, and when consciousness is treated as intrinsic to organised matter, experience is the interior aspect of that sensing. Nothing further needs to be added. The hard problem dissolves because the initial exclusion that created it is refused.
Borderline Cases Become Central Evidence
Viruses, seeds, spores, cysts and post-mortem cellular activity are chronically awkward for definitions of life that demand continuous metabolism or clear membership in a living category. Under the latency principle they are expected. Expression of living capacities is suspended under conditions of instability or extreme constraint and resumes when stable or predictably changing conditions return. The borderline cases confirm the continuum rather than threatening the definition of life.
A seed in dry storage shows no metabolism yet remains capable of full living activity when hydrated. A virus outside a host displays no independent metabolism yet executes precise strategic behaviour once inside a cellular environment. Cells continue measurable activity after organismal death. In each case the conventional markers fail while the underlying capacity persists. The latency view accounts for all of them without special pleading.
The Continuum Restored
Removing the life–non-life divide restores a single continuum of organised sensing and response under the perpetuation drive. Expression rises and falls with organisational conditions. Complexity of expression varies enormously. The fundamental property does not appear and disappear. Physics and biology are no longer separated by an ontological wall; biology is the study of the more elaborate expressions of capacities already present at the physical foundation.
This does not collapse useful methodological distinctions. It is still practical to study metabolic networks, developmental genetics and ecological interactions as specialised domains. What is removed is the claim that these domains study something that was once entirely absent from the material continuum and then mysteriously inserted.
