Science has long operated with a sharp division: some matter is alive, most matter is not. Living systems are treated as a special, late, and fragile exception within a fundamentally non-living universe. This division is now under direct challenge from both logic and experiment.

If the same particles that constitute a living cell also constitute a rock, and if those particles are continuous in their history from the earliest matter to the present, then the claim that life appears from utterly non-living components requires an unexplained insertion of a new property at some point in the chain. No such insertion has ever been identified.

The Continuity Argument

Every atom in a human body has a history that extends back through stellar nucleosynthesis to the earliest forms of matter. The protons, neutrons, and electrons that form a carbon atom in a neuron are not different in kind from those that formed the first hydrogen atoms. The periodic table records new arrangements and energy states of the same underlying constituents, not the appearance of new fundamental matter.

If those same constituents eventually participate in a conscious living organism, the property of life and consciousness cannot have been absent from the chain and then suddenly added. It must have been latent in the matter throughout. The alternative is to claim that a genuinely new ontological property enters the universe at some unspecified stage without any physical mechanism for its entry. That claim has never been made precise or empirically supported.

The Latency Principle

Life and consciousness are fundamental properties of matter. They are expressed according to the conditions of stability and organisation available at each scale. Under conditions of high instability or extreme constraint, expression is suspended. Under stable or predictably changing conditions, expression resumes and can increase in complexity.

This is why seeds remain alive while showing no metabolism, why viruses display strategic behaviour without continuous independent metabolism, and why cells continue activity after organismal death. The conventional markers of life fail in these cases while the underlying capacity persists. The capacity is not created by metabolism or by neural complexity. It is revealed by them under the right conditions.

Experimental Support

Xenobots and Anthrobots show that cells freed from organismal constraints spontaneously generate new organised, goal-directed forms. The competence was not inserted by the experimenters. It was latent in the cells. Colonial organisms such as siphonophores show genetically identical units specialising and cooperating as a single functional body. The capacity for such organisation is present in the living units themselves.

These examples do not stand alone. They form part of a consistent pattern: when constraints change and stable conditions are available, living matter expresses organised, purposeful behaviour. The boundary that treats most matter as permanently non-living cannot accommodate this pattern without continuous special pleading.

Consequences of Maintaining the False Boundary

The living versus non-living division creates permanent explanatory gaps. It cannot explain how life began without smuggling in the very property it claims was absent. It cannot explain the continuum of organised behaviour from simple cells to complex organisms without inventing thresholds that have no clear physical basis. It forces consciousness to be treated as a late and mysterious product of neural complexity even though cellular systems already display the relevant capacities.

Removing the false boundary resolves these gaps. Matter is alive. Consciousness is a fundamental property expressed at every scale according to available conditions. Complexity of expression varies. The property itself does not appear and disappear.

Conclusion

The sharp boundary between living and non-living matter is not required by observation and is contradicted by the continuity of material history and by experimental demonstrations of latent cellular competence. Everything is alive. Consciousness is present in all matter, expressed according to the stability and organisational conditions at each scale.

What varies is not the presence of life but the degree and form of its expression. The universe is not a non-living stage on which life briefly appears. It is a living system in which expression rises and falls with local conditions.
