Organ transplantation depends on this fact: organs are removed from donors who have been declared dead and are successfully integrated into living recipients. The cells of those organs were not extinguished by the death of the original organism.

Research has documented continued gene expression and cellular responses in the hours following organismal death. The higher-level coordination that defined the living person has ended. The cellular agents that composed the body have not.

When those conditions are disrupted, expression is suspended. When stable conditions return, expression resumes.

Organismal death removes the stable higher-level organisation. Cellular expression continues under whatever residual conditions remain. In transplantation, new stable conditions are supplied by the recipient body, and the cells integrate into a new collective. In the absence of such conditions, cellular activity gradually ceases as the local environment deteriorates.

The cells do not die because the organism died. They die later, when their own local conditions fail.
