How to Change How Someone Feels About You at Work
You cannot erase their past labour around you. You can stop giving them new reasons to file that labour as a grievance, and you can ask for a small piece of work they will be glad they did.
These notes are inspired by learning from UNITE, the Unified Theory of Emotions. I am not publishing the mechanism or the formula. That part is protected and is what I use in advisory work. You do not need the hidden arithmetic to test the advice. Sit with the situation. If it still looks true after you have pictured the back end, the rule is usable.
What you do not control
They have already spent time because of you: meetings, cover, political risk, a hire they backed. That spend is in the record. How often they must see you is mostly in the diary. Those two facts do not reset because you had a good lunch. The only fast lever is how they read the spend, and whether the next spend is clean.
This is why a charm offensive after a year of using someone fails. You are asking them to relabel old nights while you still create new ones.
First, stop manufacturing blame
Reply when you said you would. Do not take credit that needs their name. Do not bounce a crisis they cannot see coming. Do not use them as an audience for your fear. Each of those is a small invoice they did not agree to. Stack enough and no offsite will help.
Write a list of the last five times they had to work because of your sloppiness. End those five. That is the unglamorous half. Skip it and the rest is technique.
Then ask for work they will not resent
Advice they are qualified to give, on something you will actually use. A short review of a page. A choice between two options you have already narrowed. An introduction that makes them look generous, not used. Thank them in a way that does not create a debt speech.
They spend a little. If the ask was respectful and the use is real, they do not blame you. They have now invested a new, clean unit. People protect what they just helped.
Do work they did not request
Visible, proportionate, not announced as a sacrifice. Fix a thing in their world. Make a path shorter. Bring a fact they needed. Do not stand on it. Standing on it is how a gift becomes a bill.
The test is simple. If they found out you did it from someone else, would they still be glad. If the answer is no, you were performing.
What this is not
It is not flattery. It is not a trap to extract a yes. It is not love-bombing a person you will discard after the budget. Those moves raise intensity and then flip to hate when the mask slips. The rule is genuine ask, genuine thanks, genuine work.
If the relationship is already a trench, start smaller than your pride wants. One clean week. One small ask. No speech about "resetting."
Use it on a dealer, a regulator, a sceptic on the board
The title says work. The pattern is any ongoing counterpart. A dealer who hates your scheme will not be fixed by a scheme brochure. He might be moved by a visit that costs you and helps his counter, plus one question that uses his knowledge. A board sceptic might be moved by a number you let them correct.
- List three people whose feeling toward you is currently expensive.
- For each, one sloppy invoice you will stop sending.
- For each, one clean ask this fortnight.
- For each, one unadvertised help.
When you are the junior
You cannot demand their diary. You can still stop sending sloppy work that makes them redo your job. You can still ask one precise question that uses what they uniquely know. Seniors remember the person who made them feel expert without making them feel used. They forget the person who sent a novel.
When you are the senior
Your sloppy invoice is heavier because they cannot easily refuse. A late brief from you is not a small tax. It is an order. If you want them to feel better about you, your first gift is a brief that arrives when you said, with the constraint named. Then the small ask. Then the unadvertised help.
UNITE is why this works when it is real and fails when it is theatre. The formula stays unpublished. Your diary will tell you if their shoulders dropped.

Dealers and sceptics
A brochure will not fix a dealer who hates the scheme. A visit that costs you and helps his counter might. A board sceptic might move if you let them correct a number. List three expensive relationships. For each: one sloppy invoice you will stop, one clean ask, one unadvertised help.
Give the help without a speech about resetting the relationship. Pride wants a ceremony. The other person wants a week in which you were not expensive. One clean week beats one grand note.
If the trench is old, your first job is still to stop the sloppy invoices. Technique on top of new sloppiness is how charm offensives fail.
